There are two pieces of software that is a must
Karens replicator to back up all your stuff
    and
Macrium Reflect to back up your hard drive, in case you have problems with Seven that cant be fixed.

    http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
Secunia PSI to make sure that your computer always has the most up to date security

Finally, Win Patrol to help keep the computer running smoothly

I assume that you have a good firewall and anti virus

Maybe software to help you find the laptop in case it is stolen... or do you have a hardware solution for that?

consider installing live mesh as you can back up your school folder ,you will need a windows live account download windows live essentials and select the live mesh. having a live account will also give you skydrive, but the live mesh is real nice for keeping the school folder synced on the live server and safely backed up.
dropbox is also another good prog, drop a file into the dropbox folder and sign into dropbox elsewhere and download the file, no need for usb sticks, though the free dropbox account only gives 2gb free, if you send all your friends an invite and they accept you can gain up to 16gb storage with no file size limit except your overall storage allowance.

    - CCleaner <-- Cleans your computer off cookies, cache, internet history, etc.

    - Speccy <-- Monitor your computer hardware temperature

    - Media Player Classic - Home Cinema + K-Lite Codec Pack <-- For multimedia purposes (movies & music)

    - Notepad++ <-- Good alternative to Windows' built-in notepad; can be used as a scripting language tool

    - Adobe Reader <-- View / read .pdf files

    - Autodesk Sketchbook Pro <-- Artistic purposes / drawing / art

    - 7zip <-- Free tool to compressing file(s) into a single package (can be password-protected) / extracting files off its package

    - WinRAR <-- Same as 7zip, only capable of extracting some files 7zip can't

    - ImgBurn <-- Burning software tool (CD / DVD / Blu Ray)

    - Mp3tag <-- Modifies mp3 labels that appear on mp3 player's screen

Everything here is free except for Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and WinRAR.
