Problems with windows search box finding indexed items

    Hi

My current set up is to have Windows 7 Home Preimium installed on my 240gb SSD and pictures/videos/music stored on a larger standard drive. I used the location change tab on the relevant folders, to relocate My Documents/My Music etc to my standard drive. Everything operates great but I have noticed something odd. Even though I have all the folders on my standard drive (E:) set to index still (I switched off any indexing on my SSD as some people advise), its hit and miss if anything appears within search program and files for anything in these folders.

From much experimentation, I have discovered the following:

    1. If you have My Documents etc on your main system drive, (providing its set to index) you can find anything in these folders using Search programs and files, anything in My Documents will appear categorized as Documents in Search etc.

    2. If you use the location change tab to move My Documents etc to another drive, the search programs and files will no longer categorize anything stored in My Documents as Documents and will only show a few random items as 'Files'.

The issue seems tied in with the location change feature from what I can tell.

I have also come across other weird things with this feature, unless you remove My Documents etc from a library first before using the location change feature, the folder will be moved, but sometimes an empty folder will get left behind with the same name (but without the usual My Documents etc icon).

The whole indexing/relocating My Documents etc to another drive seems really bugged.

I went and replicated the same issue on another system, as far as I can tell its nothing actually wrong with my system/installation.

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this or had any thoughts.

Yep, I just posted about the same thing. I moved my documents librarys off of SSD to HDD and I cant get boo for search results eventhough its "indexed"

Fixed it! You have done nothing wrong, looks like yet another bizarre Windows 7 bug.

On my solid state setup I only moved My Documents/My Music/My Pictures/My Videos, so there is still a Users/<username> folder on my SSD system disk. What you have to do is ensure that folder is still ticked under Indexing options as being indexed! Yes, even if you have the folders on your data disk ticked for indexing the original Users/<username> folder has to be still ticked to maintain a proper indexing!

From much experimentation I have discovered many odd things, for example I had to temporarily remove My Documents etc from the library before relocating them to another drive otherwise a blank folder was left behind with an access denied error.

Its as though relocating folders/indexing/libraries just do not get on very well with each other.

So Just to clarify my fix:

    1. Ensure the folders you have moved are selected for indexing.
    2. Ensure users/<username> folders on system disk (SSD) are still selected for indexing.
