Need free task killer app. Any suggestions?

I cannot seem to be able to find any download on search engines. All I've tried to download make you download tons of their useless downloaders and other software.
I'm looking for something that will stop programs in background to speed up performance. Thanks in advance

Use the built-in Task Manager Task Manager - Open and Close Applications and Processes - Vista Forums
It says Vista but it's the same for Windows 7.

Beyond Bongos good advice, some people use a program from Iobit called Game Booster that can accomplish this. I cannot vouch for it's effectiveness personally. Suggest you make a system image before attempting to use it.

Silly question, why not simply use the built-in task manager? Using the processes tab, it's easy to kill any running program in the system if you have permission.

That said, a good replacement for it is Process Explorer, which is a much better alternative if you want to go to detailed info. For terminating processes it's just the same. Process Explorer

i didn't clarify, sorry. I used to have a program that would show all running programs and you could kill all or selected with one click. This is what I'm looking for.

I had to disable several toolbars so I can type. Sorry. I just wanted an eazy app like you would use on a smartphone to shutdown several programs that are running ibn the background without doing it manually. I am using an acer timeline 5820T-6401 with 4 gig memory. I plan to upgrade memory soon.

Is there any chance to prevent running those programs in the first place? So that there would be no performance hit and no need to close them?

Besides, any program to kill programs, you must tell it what ones to shutdown, and there is the manual work from you. It cannot know for you what you pretend it to do.

EDIT: Just realized something. If the programs to terminate are always the same, what about making a .bat file to terminate them all forcefully?
