Can Anyone Help - or Already Know the Answer to This?

I own licenses for Secure Copy version 4. It appears to install just fine on Windows 7, but it then can't find the license file to operate in the demo mode (or let me apply my purchased license to fully activate).

Compatibility modes do nothing. I've checked the Registry on an XP and Server 2K3 installations where it's working just fine. There are entries missing in the Win 7 installation, but putting everything in by hand still does nothing. The program still complains about no license file, even though it's right there (again, the included demo license or the full license).

I don't know if this is a thing somewhere else in the Registry that I'm missing or maybe a System32 perms thing or maybe a .dll or .ocx trying to write to a location that's changed (or been locked down).

If anyone wants to give it a go, the package can be downloaded here:

    Oldware.org - Download Secure Copy 4.11.002

I've pulled it down and virus-scanned it over and over, but please don't take my word for it. The demo license should show up and let you run it in the demo mode. If it can be made to get to running in the demo mode, my purchased license will work. If you want to see how it should behave in the demo mode, just install it on XP or Server 2K3.

    Many thanks in advance!!

Hello Katie and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like Secure Copy 4 is not compatible with Windows 7. According to the product information, version 4.11.002 was last released/updated March 3, 2008.

It also looks like Secure Copy is now working on version 6.X which was released in August 2012 and it's no longer free. They do have email support and perhaps they know of a way to run version 4.X in Compatibility Mode if this tutorial doesn't help.

Thanks, but I've been down the compatibility checker road. Also, the product was never free - I paid a hefty sum for perpetual licenses, and it was just good luck on the part of the vendor that something in W7/2K8 doesn't like the version 4.xx installation package.

I say good luck for the vendor, because the licenses for the new version are $500 PER SERVER, and they're married to the hardware, even if you use it to copy a single file. It hits a licensing server that keeps score, and there's no way around it. You turn in a system from a lease, and the license goes with it. No forgiveness or reusing of a high-dollar item with the new version.

There's a competitor I've spoken with that tells me they've figured out what to do to make it work, but they won't tell me what to do. That's why I'm asking, and hoping someone will take the challenge for a consulting fee. No reverse engineering or anything like that, just figuring out what an XP installation does and why the same thing won't happen on W7. Registry perms, .dll or .ocx registration security issues, etc. It's got to be something like that.

All said respectfully and cheerfully. Please don't hear it any other way.

No offense taken. I can understand the frustration of having a perpetual or lifetime license and then finding out my definition of lifetime isn't the same as the manufacturer's definition.

Perhaps someone else will see this thread and offer a workable solution.

    Thanks - I appreciate it.

I'll pay a consulting fee for an answer, and not chump change, either. No monkey business! I own legitimate licenses. I just need it to load properly so I can apply my license and go.

Please post if you need more info.
