DVD Shrink 3.2

It's freeware and I use it to copy all my DVD's to my HTPC.

Download DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 - DVD Shrink - A FREE software to backup DVD disks ! - Softpedia

In my country copying legally bought DVD's for own use is legal.

another one is DVDFab.

Really that along with DVDShrink is all you need to make backups of your DVDs. DVDShrink cannot backup many new titles because it hasn't been updated for some time.

Another one is called AnyDVD. Free trial but if you use it for more than 14 days (I think) you have to pay. AnyDVD and DVDShrink make a good combo for those titles that DVDShrink can't handle alone.

I use a combination of DVDfab HD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. The first one removes and copy-protection, which is great for ripping my legal DVDs to .mkv files for my HTPC, and DVD Shrink will handle the compression to let the files fit on a standard blank DVD.

I use DVD Fab HD to rip the movie, FixVTS to fix any issues with scrambled content on the disc and DVD Shrink to shrink it down. I then burn onto DVD rewriteables, watch them and record back over the disks. I use this process to better utilize my time and my Netflix subscription. This way I can watch the movies when I get around to it, or horror/suspense movies when my wife is in bed early rather than when Netflix ships to me.

Well, then you will need to convert it to MP4.

I've tried many programs, but by far the best is "TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress".

What I do is, I use DVDShrink for ripping and then compress it with
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress.
(in DVD Shrink, make sure you chose the "re-author mode". In that mode you can select to only rip the movie without menu's and extra's.)

About
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress

A few things I must add.
First, after experimenting a lot, I recommend not to make the output file smaller than 1.5gb. Setting it smaller will introduce artifacts which are clearly visible on LCD screens.

Second, any video conversion program has quite a steep learning curve regarding to which settings work best.
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress is one of the easiest to use, but still you must expect to spend hours getting the right settings that suite you.

Experiment with only a selection of 1 minute of video, so the conversion goes fast.
Once you found the right settings you can save it as a template, so you won't have to do it all again.

Third, converting a 4.5gb movie to MP4 will take up a lot of time.
Of course this depends on your machine, but it will be around 1hr conversion for every 1hr of video. (and that is quite fast for shrinking a 4.5gb video to 1.5gb)

TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress is optimized for multiple cores.

Oh, and it cost's $99 but considering it's features that is very cheap.

What you want is Handbrake. It's becoming the standard, and it's free and quite easy to use.

I'll second Handbrake. It's free and easy and is becoming the standard. It's the only app that I have continued using.

Don't hold me to this, but I think Handbrake is multi-threaded, so it flies on multi-core systems.
