The steps I took to run Quicken 2004 on Windows7 Professional

BACKGROUND:

I have posted this because I found that many people had provided information that either just didn't work (for me) or which effectively says "you can't run Quicken 2004 under Windows 7". You can - both in XP compatibility mode and natively!

This post relates specifically to 'Quicken 2004 Release2 CD 2004'. I am using this version because Intuit stopped selling Quicken in the UK in that year. The Release 2 variant was a 'free' disc that Quicken sent to their customers (well those who had recently paid for Quicken 2004 anyway) along with the letter that said they were withdrawing support from the UK. This CD doesn't require a licence key or any other form of authorisation in order to use it although it does nag you to register for a while (don't bother).

I MUST EMPHASISE that I do not use Quicken to download from Financial Institutions - partly because I found the process error prone and partly because Intuit withdrew this facility about 3 years after my purchase - presumably to encourage users to upgrade - despite the fact that it wasn't possible to upgrade in the UK anyway! Therefore I can't say whether it would work or not; I suspect not.

A. FAILED 'STRAIGHT' INSTALL into Windows 7:

B. SUCCESS WITH Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode


After having installed Windows Virtual PC and Windows Compatibility Mode, I then started an installation of Quicken into the XP Mode system.

The Quicken installation said it was going to install it into C:\Program Files. Not realising (or remembering) that the C: drive under XPMode appears to be a separate 'partition', I felt it ought to go into C:\Program Files (x86) with all the other 32-bit stuff, so I did a 'custom install' to that.

It came up with an error message so I backed out and checked for any residuals (there were none that I could find using Windows Explorer).

I then went for a default install. This seemed to go OK.

However, once I tried to use my Quicken data file - which I'd put into a sub-directory of C:\, I got many write fails from 'QSD'.

I then had a think. There was a C drive appearing in Windows Explorer within XP Mode as well as the C: drive that appears in Windows 7. I tried loading the SAMPLE Quicken application and this didn't have any fails. I discovered that the SAMPLE Quicken file was stored in: C:\Program Files\Quicken BUT THIS WAS IN THE XP MODE 'PARTITION' - NOT THE Windows 7 C drive [sorry if my terminology is haywire here].

So, I thought that if I installed my data files into this XPMode directory, it might work. It did.

So I then set up a directory under the XPMode C drive - My Documents - specifically:

C:\Documents and Settings\XPMUser\My Documents\Quicken Data (on XPM-C).

and moved my data files (that I backed up while still on Windows XP before installation od Windows 7) into this folder.

That worked too.

I then managed to get an Icon on to the W7 Start Menu and on to the W7 Task Bar so that the whole shooting match would launch from Windows 7. THIS LAUNCH TAKES A LONG TIME - SO, IF YOU ARE LIKELY TO USE IT MANY TIMES, IT'S PROBABLY BEST TO LEAVE THE VIRTUAL M/C RUNNING OR AT LEAST HIBERNATING.

So Quicken was working in XP Mode - not ideal but better than nothing!

The next step was to try to get it running natively under Windows 7.

SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATION into native Windows 7:

Some of these steps may not be necessary but this is what worked for me.

1. Before installing Quicken, I copied the complete set of Quicken installation files from the Quicken product disc on to a new folder on my C: drive.

2. I then changed the properties of the setup.exe program within this folder by ticking “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and selecting Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and ticked “Run this program as an administrator”.

3. I ran setup.exe and prevented Quicken from loading at the end of the installation by de-selecting that option from the installation dialogue. [This was in accordance with the instructions given in the link which appears below viz: "Do not (!) allow it to open the programme at the end".]

4. Quicken got installed in c:\Program Files (x86) and I then checked that the .dll files mentioned were present (they were and are found in the c:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken).

[A couple of commentators suggest that you need to copy the .dll files across from an XP installation. I didn't find I needed to do this. The files concerned are: mfc70.dll, msvcr70.dll and msvcp70.dll.

5. I set up a shortcut on the desktop pointing to C:\Program Files9x86)\Quicken\qw.exe and pinned this to the TaskBar and to the START menu (belt and two pairs of braces :) - although I normally operate exclusively off the TaskBar).

6. To get rid of the message:

"Quicken is not currently the application configured for handling Web Connect data. Would you like to make it the default application for any Web Connect data that you download from your financial institution's web site?"

- I followed the advice in the second URL given below by right clicking on the Quicken shortcut ICON from which I was launching Quicken, selected Properties, clicked on the compatibility TAB; and REMOVED the tick in the box labelled "Run this program in compatibility mode for ... <It was previously set to "Windows XP Service Pack 3" as described above>.

It may be that one doesn't need to set "Run this program in compatibility mode for ..." in step 2 but I haven't uninstalled and then repeated the installation to find out!

7. You can to stop (with the caveat below) the annoying "Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer" message from appearing -

either:
by turning off Run as Administrator in the properties for quicken.exe

or:
by turning User Account Control OFF (a bit dodgy perhaps;

However, turning off "Run as Administrator" STOPPED Quicken BACKUP writing to the C: Drive on my computer, so I reinstated "Run as administrator" in order to run backup. (I suspect that fiddling around with the ownership of Quicken or the C: drive might enable one to circumvent this but I don't know what I'm doing in this area.)

FWIW.... This was an excellent post and the native install has just worked for me in Windows 10 as well.

I've read many different methods of installing Quicken in W7 and also 8 & 10. Many of these (which may well work) are relatively complex. I have a 2000 version of Quicken 98 which works perfectly in W7 and now in W10. Here's the easiest of easy install methods. Boot your PC up in Safe Mode. Stick your install CD in the drive and find the .exe file on the disc and run it. The installation will proceed just as if you were installing normally in windows. Restart normally into windows and your Quicken will be good to go!

I am the Jim referred to above.

If anyone is still using Quicken 2004 in the UK on Windows 10, I have found that

1. going into compatibility settings for qw.exe in the program files(x86), and
2. setting it to run as Windows 7 , then
3. going into the needs additional permissions, and making sure it runs with administrator privileges

works for me. Initially it didn't work at all; then with Windows XP compatible setting it would not backup to my C drive. Now it works fine.

I still have not found anything that compares with QUicken for finance management. I wish Intuit would release a new UK version.

Anyone figured how to stop the mouse scroll always going up the register whatever way you scroll after Xp?

Sorry, Dick Bower, I am not aware of any method of preventing the sidebar working perversely on Quicken under either Windows 7 or Windows 10 and it's a pain.

I am the original poster of this topic - here's an update which might be of interest to Quicken users or those seeking an alternative.


I now use an Apple MacBook having become annoyed by: Windows unreliability, lack of availability (due to constant updates which often make the PC unusable for up to an hour after booting) and especially due to Windows 10's underhand snooping (which is being partially 'retro-fitted' - without my authority - to Windows 7).

[In this regard, I use Sophos Spybot AntiBeacon to stop Microsoft's snooping on W7 and W10 and 'Never10' to prevent my Windows 7 installations being 'upgraded' to Windows 10. Both are free of charge.]

Be sure to do an anti virus check on any download. Interestingly, some of the spying features that get disabled by using AntiBeacon sometimes get turned on again by Windows Update, so you need to check after each update and re-run AntiBeacon if it has.

However, I run 'Parallels' on the Mac so that I can use Windows 7 and Windows 10 for:

• Quicken;
• for the Developer suite for Lotus/IBM Notes - which unlike the client isn't available for the Mac;
• and also for keeping in touch with Microsoft Windows for the purposes of assisting friends and family with their Windows problems.

Since the original post, I have run Quicken (without financial institution updates) on 'Parallels' on the Mac but I got tired of switching between Windows and OSX, using Quicken with the Mac Keyboard and Trackpad and the rather awkward way in which Quicken works since Windows 7 (including the point that Dick Bower (see above - 26 July 2016) makes on scrolling).

So, I did some digging and eventually selected Jumsoft 'Money' to run my accounts natively under Apple's OSX 10.11.5. I use this for all types of account - including Investment Accounts. 'Money' is nowhere near as comprehensive as Quicken but suffices. Whilst 'Money' is OK for BANKING, CASH and SAVINGS ACCOUNTS (in fact I no longer use Quicken for these types of account) I do additionally maintain my INVESTMENT ACCOUNTS in Quicken, updating these once a week in respect of prices and changed share or fund holdings. It's a partial duplication but Quicken is far better than 'Money' for historical analyses and reports. It's also a fall-back in case I corrupt my 'Money' database.

I realise that the following this is a bit 'off-topic' but it could save a lot of frustration for anyone adopting Jumsoft 'Money'. If you live in the UK (or anywhere else outside the USA), there is an undocumented feature of 'Money' which enables you to use an alternative currency for setting up new securities (stocks, shares, investment trusts and funds). It is necessary when naming an account to put a currency suffix after the SYMBOL name. Let's say you wanted to set up a new SECURITY for BP (British Petroleum): you give it the NAME "BP" but the SYMBOL has to be "BP:GBP" (in both cases without the surrounding quotation marks). With no suffix, the currency defaults to $US.

What a shame that the original Intuit Quicken is no longer available - the successor products from Intuit appear to be inadequate for my purposes.

Hi guys, just managed to get Quicken XG 2004 working under the Windows 10 environment... thanks, however I don't now seem to be able to print or set up the print options, any ideas or has anyone else come across this?
