Would like Live Mesh on my work PC

I requested that IT install Live Mesh on my workstation so that I can synchronise my work files with my personal laptop and desktop. They said they couldn't do that because it may compromise network security and advised me to use VPN to connect to the university servers to access my files (this is horrendously slow, especially when working with many (hundreds of) large .TIFF files). Is there any way to run a portable version of Live Mesh from this PC without the need to install it and without compromising network security?

Perhaps I can get my personal laptop and desktop to automatically log-in via VPN and synchronise from their end via that access?

Speaking as an administrator responsible for a network of over 200 clients, plus servers, don't even think about it.

While you may have the best of intentions, and may even be savvy enough to understand the possible consequences of what you want to do, your administrator simply can't allow user to do such things.

Be thankful they allow VPN access. A lot of places don't even allow that for anyone but top level management and IT.

I don't understand you thx1139. Once you were told by the IT department NO. Why are you asking the good folks here how to do something the university and IT department has said NO?

    I'm a bad person :)

What about via the VPN then? Is it possible for me to maintain a constant VPN connection through which my personal computers can then synchronise? What would be really sweet is if my files were synchronised through the VPN and all other traffic did not. Does that make sense?

What if I get one of those special USB crossover cables that lets you connect one computer to another? Then I could connect my laptop to my work PC and maybe synchronise my data that way?

I don't think your IT department will allow that either. Your laptop can be infected and infect the network you are hooking into. Just do it as your IT department has instructed you to do it and be happy. Put it another way; if a employ did something like you are trying to do to my network or domain they would not have a job at sunset.
