Picture re-naming software

Is there any software that renames photos? The names of the files are currently IMG_8484 and IMG_2273 that could rename the files to 1, 2 , 3 etc .. ? To save me going through 1 by 1 renaming them manually.

Thanks,
Matt

I've been happy with IrfanView. It does far more than just batch renaming.
