Just before


It should have said something like "found Windows 7 and win8". And it asks for "shall I repair it (add it to bcd menu) and reboot? You cancelled that most likely!!(?) That's the reason for the error screen


bootrec/rebuildbcd does the same. It adds new entries to bcd menu.
After that you did another "startup repair" I assume(?) that rewrites the bootmgr file to harddisk.

If you had followed instructions so have done 3 startup repairs (reboot in between)... al was fixed automagically. Only win8 was still in bootmenu afterwards. But that can be removed using msconfig as well.
