Right click on open space on your desktop, view, and Uncheck show desktop items.
This will hide all program icons on your desktop.

Desktop Icons - Hide or Show

Hope this is what you were looking for.

you want stardock fences, the new version is no longer free, so you need version 1.

there is a link for it halfway down this page...

    Boo,
I must be getting old and senile in my old age as I can't see where his thread "Hiding Desktop items has any relation to Stardock fences!

I must update and increase dosage of my meds if this is what he was looking for!

thanks a bunch! never knew that, and the link is cool!
and didn't think of ever creating a .bat file just for this... cool!!

only thing... when you hide all, you hide the unhide .bat. i can't add the .bats to the taskbar. is there a way to pin this somehow?
also, just for kicks, can you change the icon of the icon?

When you right click on open space on desktop there is an item called properties usually at the bottom of the list.
Click on properties and there will be a tab called shortcut where you will see change icon.

There also is a selection where you can pin to taskbar or pin to start menu when you right click on open space.
Let me know if this is what you are looking for.

Right click on the open space on your desktop not your files.
