    "Open With" Dialog?

Wow, I seem to be the one having all sorts of odd glitches in Windows 7.

    Am I seeing double?

But let me clarify. The two "Excel"s are actually different programs - I have both Office 2000 and Office 2007 on here, and since 2007 is newer it insists on opening all my Office documents, even if I browse to the EXE of the 2000 version (thus why it has the old icon).
I discovered that by copying the EXE and renaming it (PowerPoint.EXE, Excel 2000.EXE, etc.) they'll open perfectly fine and avoid that stupid 2007 ownership crap.

But now the bad side is I have two identical-looking choices in the menu. I'd rather just have the Excel 2007 picture with that name and the 2000 one.
Also, no idea why OpenOffice is on there twice - I just noticed that one today.

Is there some registry value that says what programs appear in the "Open With..." list? Like, would it be possible to add or remove entries from it without actually trying to use that menu? (Because as far as I know it's physically impossible to REMOVE things from that list short of removing the program...)

Why do you have both Office 2000 and 2007 on your system, as well as Open Office? I would pick one and delete the others.

    Because I can?

    But to break it down:
I think Office 2007 is a steaming pile of ... you know, but because all the professors here use the OOXML files, I need to have Office 2007 for their classes.
When I do stuff for personal use I always use 2000 since it's just flat-out the best Office ever.

OpenOffice I installed for kicks and giggles, mainly because it doesn't interfere with the normal Office, and it's free...

    I don't see how it's a problem, I really just wanted an answer :)

From your screenshot I can see how it is a problem.

    Hint:
Find excel.exe of one of your offices, and change icon.
Do the same for other apps.
Then you can at least tell them apart.

    Um.

How do you change the icon of an EXE?

And either way, the same exact OpenOffice program is listed twice - you can clearly see the filename is identical...

Does anybody know a way to edit the "open with" dialog using the registry? I know in XP you could, I saw it when searching through the registry one time...

    Oops I forgot.

    MicroAngelo on display.

After install right click anything and chose, change appearance.

I am not saying that you cannot make it work. You can. But, there is a high degree of probability that you will "have to make it work" time and time again. Maybe, maybe not. If you were a customer of mine, I would decline to support that option as a more reliable zero-cost option is available.

Please note that this thread is not getting the attention of experienced personnel willing to support the proposed configuration. I am not saying they are not out there, but it is an unnecessary headache.

Yeah but the difference here is I actually made it work.

It's just the "Open with" dialog I need help with, which is a *Windows* feature, not Office.

I might see if the registry values are the same as in XP... I know if you search for something, say ".doc", you'll find a section that has all the default open-with programs for any given extension. And stuff can be deleted from there...
