I had the same problem with my Photoshop (CS5.1) a while ago. A simple reinstall fixed it.
If this doesn't fix it, you can always allow Photoshop to use more RAM:
Go to Edit > Preferences > Preformance
Check the value for Let Photoshop Use
Other things that might work are:
- Disable the thumbnail previews in the Layer panel.
- Turn off Front Preview under Edit > Preferences > Type.
