I disabled all start up programs except AV, II viewed the event viewer it has 4671 events, many of them errors, I don't know which one to choose. There are over two million events in the process monitor. I just don't know where to begin when there are that many things to sort out

I did run the process monitor and I got over 3 million events, most of them read success or name not found. some said invalid device request, reparse or files locked with only readers. Is there anyting specific I should be looking for?

It says in the steps to google repeat errors to see how others resolved them. Did you do that?

At this point it might be less trouble to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 than to troubleshoot, repair System files damaged by the infection, or do a Repair Install. We can also help you get a perfect install since it's a specialty of these forums.

You can back up your files to quarantine but they need to be scanned by MSE and Malwarebytes before being reimported into a new install.

Read over the steps involved to see if its something you want to take on. We have helped many satisfied users reinstall.

I do want to do a clean install but I am going to wait until my new laptop gets here which should be in less than a week.
In the meantime I made these changes and I was able to update my adobe flash player. Are these changes unsafe?????

2 Click the "Tools" drop down and select "Internet Options" at the bottom. This opens the "Internet Options" window.

3

Go to the "Security" tab and verify that "Internet" is selected under "Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings." Click the "Custom Level" icon and scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section.

4 Select "Enable" for "Don't prompt for client certificate when no certificates or only one certificate exists." Click the "OK" button to save the change.

5 Go to the "Advanced" tab scroll down to the "Security" section.

6 Uncheck the box for "Warn about certificate address mismatch." Click the "Apply" button to save the change

7 Click the "OK" button to close the Internet Options window.

Obviously you would want to be alerted of an expired or mismatched certificate. But since you are obviously getting false alerts at this point, it would be ok for a short time. I would, as always, be concerned about the underlying cause, as an infection is always a possibility. A clean install, following Greg's directions should of course remedy that. A Guy

TY AGuy, I agree that a clean install is the way to go. I plan on moving the entire C drive from the old computer to an external hardrive and just start with a fresh install on the old laptop. I can then add Norton to the new computer I am getting and run a scan on the external before I import any files to the new computer. I will give the old computer with the fresh install to my wife and I am going to use the new laptop and with the forums help I should be OK, so I hope

If you use the tools and methods given in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
you will get and keep a perfect install for as long as you do.

Its not a good start to talk about installing Norton bloatware. Use the lightweight tools which work best with Win7 and don't strangle it.

What's needed to back up to your external is also discussed. There's no point in copying the entire C drive.
