Add/Remove Programs has gotten quiet

I'm not sure when it started, but no more than a month ago Installing/Un-installing software stopped consistently telling me when it had completed. There's never an error (at least that I've been shown or found yet). The window just disappears or sits in the task bar and previews as blank in Aero and can't be maximized. So far it appears that the installs/uninstalls are successful. But it could be a time bomb I haven't fully realized too. Dunno.

Program name does disappear from control panel list of installed software. It seems that the ones that require reboot are finishing normally with the restart prompt. I did a full AMD driver refresh yesterday and am pretty sure I was prompted. But before that Scenia software outdater scanner just closed the dialogue and called it a day without a peep. Any ideas how I could investigate if these are actually completing all the way? Besides waiting for the system to eventually implode.

This happens from Windows Installer accessed any way possible: add/remove in CP, the uninstall link in start menu, doesn't seem to matter. I just ran the Fix It and used MS Windows Essentials software pack as a test since I have yet to look at any of it. The troubleshooter said it finished in the log, but I don't get the obligatory "ACME INC SOFTWARE SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED" and at least an option to reboot... come on... I'm not being demanding. There's just a few things I've grown to expect out of Win7 and one is constant reboots. So I do it just in case.

Another pattern to this is a solid 10 sec delay at the very beginning of the process when the progress bar appears normally but sits and doesn't move. This is not a system freeze as the animations are still chugging along, but more like Windows Installer is getting hung up on itself in the same way each time. Then for whatever reason BOOM, it starts cruising for the finish. This seems to happen on both installs and uninstalls just like the notification issue. This is a new one for me. What do you think?

I'm going to run SFC.exe now, but it's only been a few weeks since I ran it. I'll report back with logs.

Speaking of logs I just got Win7SDK and the Win Performance Toolkit log tracing function working yesterday, so how can I use that to trace an actual install/uninstall?

There are 2 files I have tweaked to mod the Windows login and logout screens. "BASEBRD.DLL" was modded in both \SYSTEM32 and \SYSWOW64 locations. "authui.dll" was also replaced in 2 locations. So pretty sure these always appear in the list. I did a VERIFY ONLY sfc scan just to look.

I don't see anything else in there being flagged. There must be some good stuff burried deep in the MS forums but I came up empty on these symptoms with Google, so here I am. This is the first time Windows has had such a subtle problem. It's unsettling because of it, and why it took me a couple weeks to ask for help.

I just uninstalled VIA audio software and watched the proceedings carefully.

I would say MANY processes reacting to user input seem to have a pronounced pre-lag time to them. Also noticed a pronounced hard freeze up just after login to the desktop. nothing moved for 10 sec or so. Lots of software is being shifted around so we will see if there's a pattern to that one.

And it doesn't appear that the Win Installers are actually disappearing as i assumed, but they are being minimized immediately to the task bar, where I didn't see them until now. The icon is basically unresponsive stuck to that task bar until the very end of the Win Installer task. The reboot prompt did appear, finally. So I dunno... strange things are afoot at the Circle K. I'm also finding more about whats going on behind the scenes in the OS after doing my first detailed trace with the SDK. Talk about info over load! My shutdown dataset was 60 mb.
