    Programs won't update

My programs will not update. Window 7 (64) updates normally as does my AV (MS security essentials). 3 browsers work (FF, Opera, Safari) while 2 don't (IE, Chrome) I've turned off Firewall (Comodo) and still nothing. Several months ago Chrome and IE stopped working, now seems to have spread to any standalone program which requires updating. Initial downloads of the programs work fine. Malware and virus scans come back as clean. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Seven Forums kidkaroo. I'm a bit confused, but perhaps you have multiple issues. First, you say your programs won't update. Specifically? You have programs that are set to auto update and they don't? You try to manually update programs and what happens? As much detail about your problem as possible.

Second you say IE and Chrome "don't work", again, specifically? They will not open? They open but cannot connect to any web pages? Details to help us please.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome. I've been trying to manually update several programs over an extended period without success. CCleaner gets "0x2efd: A connection with the server could not be established" FixIt returns Error Code: 80072EE2. I've read up on both error codes, the former suggests firewall issues, so I've temporarily immobilized Comodo. The latter error code pertains specifically to windows update, which works fine on my system. The other programs, like Process Lasso and Glary Utilities merely state that the server can't be reached. I'm trying to register Process Lasso, not update. IE and Chrome won't load pages at all. And although Opera, FF and Safari work perfectly, I've just downloaded another copy of Opera 12.15 and it too refuses to load pages. My email client and one of my RSS readers work fine, the other RSS doesn't (Gravity) Malwarebytes and MS Security Essentials update normally and both return clean systems after full scans are done in safe mode. Both FF and Thunderbird update as required. I have also checked for corrupted system files, and my system event log entries flagged as "error" don't shed any light on the matter either.

Thanks for the recommendation. My 3G doesn't load in safe mode with networking, I'll try getting on-line via wifi as soon as I'm able to.

You may have 'adware' .... First clean all temporary folders with TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

Next Download AdWareCleaner AdwCleaner Download to your desktop
1.Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator to launch the application.
    2.Click on Delete button.
    3.Confirm each time with OK.
4.Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
Note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Thanks for the reply, I followed your instructions. As requested, please find attached the AdWareCleaner logfile. I'm afraid the problem still persists.

I see adware Babylon was deleted, good!

    Update Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 7u21.
      Java SE Downloads
    • Scroll over to the right (JRE)
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Now, make sure you don't have a "proxy" browser link enabled.

    1) Under “Tools” in the browser tool bar select “Internet Options”.
    2) In the “Internet Options” window that pops up, click the “Connections” tab at the top.
    3) Click “LAN Settings” near the bottom of the “Connections” section.
    4) If the “Proxy server” checkbox is marked with a check, click it to deselect/uncheck it.
    5) Click “Ok” to close the “Local Area Network (LAN) Settings” window.
    6) Click “Ok” to close the “Internet Options” window.
    Reboot
Make sure "Proxy server" is still disabled under your LAN Settings.
Test whether internet connectivity is restored.

Tell me how you're doing and if you can update your software programs now.

    Confused and bewildred.

Thank you for the detailed and easy to follow instructions. I've subsequently also tried updating the problem programs in safe mode with networking enabled via a wifi connection, unfortunately, all without change. My firewall is still disabled, however, I'm able to see the active connections, both the functioning and non-functioning browsers connect and send out a few bytes. That's as far as it goes, as IE and the "non-updating" programs receive zero bytes back while the others function normally.
