Windows 7 Native Burning OK, other burning apps NOT OK

When I burn cd/dvds with Windows 7 built in burning software and windows media player all my burns are successful. When I try to use Nero, CD Burner XP or imgburn, it fails. My computer is plenty fast enough(2.8ghz, 4gb ddr2, 250gb sata hd) and I tried reinstalling windows 7 without nero or deamon tools and tested with CD Burner XP, it still failed. I am using Sony blank CD's and also tried a few other name brand. I am burning at the lowest speeds. I purchased a brand new dvd burner and the firmware is up to date. The error I am getting is "Could not write to Disc". It fails randomly anywhere from 3%-30%. Any ideas? Again, windows 7 native burning works fine but other software does not. Same pc, same blanks, same burner, same hardware just different software. Any Ideas at all?

All motherboard drivers are installed. I guess I can just use Windows 7 to burn but would like to have Nero. I just don't understand why windows media player can burn a cd fine but Nero cant, same blank discs, same speed, same songs, I don't get it.

I bet you have the same feeling that something in Windows 7 needs to be configured/changed. I honestly think I tried everything. The only other possible explanation is media (brand/quality of blank cd's) but the blanks I'm using are Sony and they work perfect with 2 other burners I tested. If you ever find a fix please let me know and I will let you know If I find anything. Thanks.

If you will both update your system specs to include the model of your burners you might be better helped.

I have had the exact same issue for the past week. I have not done my Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade yet but I'm about to. Still on Vista Ultimate.
However, I trashed the Sony CD-R's this week. Worst media ever for me. I was only able to burn using Windows native burning, and randomly Windows Media Player. Using Nero 8 and then Nero 9 demo gave me a message "Please insert writeable disc" or if it did start to burn, it would fail at about 30%. I have an old Plextor PX 712A which has been nothing short of a workhorse for a few years. Never had a problem burning before.

Was about to purchase a new DVD burner and instead tried my HP 1040d external burner using Nero 8 and Nero 9 demo and got the same error messages. For me, it was the Sony media. I tried using an old TDK disc.....no problem! I just purchased new media: Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden, no problems with the Plextor at all. Believe it or not, I'm still not 100% sure that the Plextor is working up to par, but at least I know I can burn with Nero again. However, I have random problems using HP CD-R media too. Yet I can use HP Lightscribe discs with no problem.

I was having problems using Imgburn on Windows 7 until I disabled the shell burning feature. Now Imgburn will "lock drive exclusive access" with no complaint. Even burning Double Layer discs runs smooth. I own Nero Ultimate 6. First and last Nero package I bought. Once I found free software that converted and burned I stopped installing it on my new PCs. Just too much goes wrong with it. If I put a blank disc in and without thinking start Nero before the burner LED stops flashing, and it doesn't like the blank, guess what? The registry is hosed and I have to completely uninstall and reinstall it. I got tired of that real fast. Plus converters like FAVC, AVStoDVD, DVD Flick, and AutoGK, AviDemux on the divx side, work better anyway. Just use Imgburn to burn DVD and Burrrn portable to burn audio CDs. All the software I mentioned is free and works great.

It looks like bad media (brand/quality of blank) was the problem for me. These blanks worked fine on Windows XP so I guess Windows 7 needs good media. I tested it out with all the software, Nero, CD Burner XP and ImgBurn all work fine. I bought TDK CDR's 50 pack for $12.99. Burn about 5 disc with no problems. THANK YOU everyone for your input! Thank you Seven Forums!
