Program to monitor folder and rename files?

Hi All, i'm looking for a way to auto rename files with a pre defined prefix and consecutive numbers when they are moved into a folder. I have tried a program called personal rename, I can get the rename function to work but the folder monitoring is giving me issues, not sure if it doesn't work the way I want it to or whether it's just me.
Does anyone know of a way to do this? Ideally id like to have a few different folders monitored each with their own rename criteria.

    Thanks.

How many files do you have in the folder to be monitored including all subfolders? If it's thousands it can cause big lags. Most programs monitor folders for changes using the FileChange Notification API built into Windows. If there are thousands of files in the monitored folder the system will bog as it checks each file in the background. It's okay if you keep the number of files low.

If this is not the issue then give more details.

The main folder has 86 subfolders with about 4200 files.

I suspect that's enough to bog down the Windows API. Does the rename program allow multiple roots? Maybe you could split up the load into serveral categorized root folders to make it easier on the app.

This sounds like a good candidate for a coding snack

If you post a request please read the rules before posting. Also if someone there knows of a program that already does the job they'll post about it. If it's not too difficult skwire or one of the other programmers who help out on that forum may write it for you. Or suggest ways to optimize the one you already have.
