Windows 7: My downloads will not install.

My downloads will not install.

I recently had a problem with my SSD (which I got primarily for my OS to boot up from) filling up with too much stuff. I tried defrag and disk clean up but I only got about 4-5 GB of space, which was rapidly filling up again. So I tried just copying a hodgepodge of files from the drive (C:\program files and C:\Program files (86)) into my main drive (F:\Downloads) This had obvious repercussions. Soon, some of my old programs didn't work because the icons were not found in their proper folder. No problem, I just made new icons for what I was trying to use. THEN I attempted to change the download directory for all new downloads/installs. I went into my regestry editor and changed the following info:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/C:

to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/F:

That had further repercussions and I knew I had screwed something up. In order to try to fix my mistake, I merged what I thought were the most important folders back to the C: drive from F: and changed my regestry back to it's default settings. Things seem to be working better but I'm back at square 1 with my SSD filling up with information. Additionally when I download anything from the internet the file is not actually downloaded and I cannot install it.

When I click the "Download" button typically there is a pop up box with a "save", "run", "open with" option. For this instance I clicked the "save" option then OK. The download appears to be working in my FireFox browser. I can see the status of the download. Then nothing happens. Normally an installer box should appear after download is completed. That isn't the case here. So I try to view my downloaded items in firefox downloads. I am able to see what I downloaded, but I cannot click on the .exe file. Additionally, when I right click the file I am unable to "open containing folder". I navigated to the folder the files should have been downloaded and there is nothing there. C:\users\Admin\appdata\local\temp

Please Help haha

I can't download either program, that is my main issue. I'll look up my own specs and get back to you.

What anti virus or other security programs do you use?
My understanding from your first post is that you can download, you just can't find them once downloaded. Is that correct?

This might also help.

If it was my computer I would remove Bitdefender using their tool and install Microsoft Security Essential. Then check and see if you have the same problem. You can always install BitDefender later if you choose.

Well You might just be on to something. BitDefender has it's own web browser called "safeplay" I have never used it until now. I was able to download and install 2 items, both failed in FireFox, IE, and Google Chrome.

I don't use BitDefender but I would suggest going to their Forum and see what you can find out. It's probably some internal BitDefender setting.

Hello, Is it possible to change where Downloads end up ? e.g., having them appear on my Desktop, rather than the download folder ? Thanks, Bob
