Saving spread sheets in open office

Have been using open office Spread Sheets for some time now, and saving results in Microsoft Excel 97.
On the last occasion I tried saving in open office to see what would happen. It was saved as a SCX file, which I have not come across before When I tried opening it again it opened in Notepad as a complete unintelligible jumble. Is there any way I can recover the original file?.

Looks like you should be able to get it back in Open Office

Afraid not. I'm not really computer literate, and have difficulty when things go wrong!. Not sure what you meant in your quote 'Go to insert > Sheet from file menu' Had a look at the link you included and decided it was a bit too technical for me. I'm a 'click this and then click that' Type!. But thanks again for your interest.

Sorry, I don't use Open Office, and there doesn't appear to be a click and fix option for this problem

Whenever a file is saved in a different format, the original format stays intact in the same folder the new format is in. Depending on what the settings are for automatic backup before saving to the new format, the backups in the original format might also exist elsewhere. Say I open abc.xls using open office. There should be backups generated while I'm working on the file. When I save the abc file to CSX(?), the abc.xls file still exist in the original folder along with the new abc.csx file. A search of the pc for abc should locate the original abc.xls file.
