I'm in the process of some amateur optimisation of my desktop pc, using Windows 7 and IE. To improve performance and start up time, it seems to be a good idea to disable unused programmes from the startup. Trouble is, I'm not sure what a lot of them are for.

My CPU fluctuates from low to high and back, for better performance, I want to prevent certain programs from running on startup. Can someone please tell me which of these programs I can prevent on startup and not alter the operation of my computer?
I've uninstalled thunderbird via control panel but it still shows in the ccleaner applications list (I assume it's in the registry)
Any ideas on how I can prevent thunderbird from showing in the applications section in ccleaner?
