I'm trying to understand torrents and P2P.

Because of my lack of knowledge and never using a torrent or P2P I'm posting this questions.

    1. Does one have to use a torrent or P2P to download legal paid for music, movies, programs?

    2. Does sites that offer and sell legal copies of the music, movies, programs require torrents or P2P?

    3. Do sites that offer and sell legal copies of music, movies, programs have a preferred method of downloading.

    4. Do sites that have legal copies of music, movies, and programs that are free (open source) require torrents or P2P?

    5. Do sites that have legal copies of music, movies, and programs that are free (open source) have other methods of downloading you can use?

I'm trying to understand when it comes to music, movies, and programs that are downloaded legally why one needs a torrent or P2P.

One legitimate use that I know of was Aspyr games, they used torrents to distribute game demos. Just had a quick look at their website, doesn't look like they do that anymore.

The only thing I use torrents for is TV shows I've missed and are not on my On Demand service.

From what I understand of them, they are used primarily for illegal downloading and file sharing. I'm sure there are legitimate uses as well, but I don't really know since almost every computer forum I visit immediately locks any thread dealing with them. In all my years of using a pc, I've never needed to use either.

Some legitimate sites use them, but not many, because they reduce the server load.

P2P and torrents are popularly used for Linux distros, almost every major distro offers a direct download + torrent for users who want choices.

Other than that, and perhaps PirateBay's "PromoBay" people use to distribute their own music and other forms of art for free, P2P is pretty much the most used tool for pirating.

P2P (Peer-to-Peer) networks are used for file sharing, they can have legitimate software, films and music, but they are mostly used for distributing cracked software and malware onto user's systems.
