Had a scour around and found this I don't know what else there is as there were plenty of registry alterations but it is risky.
Snipping Tool problem go to post #6 WHS is clued up on this stuff and has a good alternative. In the meantime I'll keep looking.

Otherwise it means a thorough back up and reinstall

The New drop-down menu only appears when the snip tool is first opened, before you have made any selection.

I don't have a reason for the missing menus after making a selection.

Sorry mate I was out hunting around and well it had been fixed. My snip just turns the whole screen opaque I don't have to use the new or anything - just outline the bits I want.:).

PSCO2007 -- thanks, but as I said, I use SnagIt, which I love, but there's no reason to have a third party app for simple snipping needs. I love Snipping Tool and all that it does.

As I mentioned, it was mostly odd because one minute it was working and another minute it wasn't.

    Thanks for your suggestion.

Britton - no such luck about it being about the reboot, I've rebooted at least a dozen times today as I tried all sorts of cleaning and checking options as I noted in my initial post.

It only corrected after rebuilding Word, which I was living in most of the day today until it happened.

    Thanks again!

    You're welcome.
I realized after my post that you asked for no additional programs.

I've been using this forever and love it, but glad you have fixed your problem.

ICit2lol - Yes, that is how the Snipping Tool works for everyone. However, if you want to control the style of the snip - a Rectangle, the entire Window, Free-form, that drop-down arrow to the right of New allows you to control what kind of snip you want.

It's actually a pretty robust tool beyond the default and I use it often.

In it's basic/simple form (which is all some need) it frosts the screen and you click and drag - you're right!

    Enjoy!
