Is there a research search engine?

I feel like I am regressing back into the stone age these past few weeks concerning google searches. I'm trying to do some research and I get products or local businesses. I use to click discussions to filter this out but I run into the almighty useless google groups discussions instead of finding new interesting forums that may be out there. Even adding -groups.google.com when searching discussions doesn't remove those results.

Anyone know of a search engine that is for research? I dont want a closed network that doesnt include everyday peoples input or undocumented/verified info which is why I think forums are great. Sites like wikipedia is great for factual information or summeries but not sharing experiences and learning from each other. So I'm looking for a search engine that excludes results of people trying to make a living. Just research. Does one exist?

Edit: Alright getting better but open to suggestions. In case anyone want to know this seems to have removed google discussion results and can remove specific websites. Maybe a firefox addon can automatically filter out websites like facebook forums and google groups. I'd be set.

    searchterm inurl:forum -site.com
