I have quite a few programs that I use for maintenance. Many will see them as overkill. I see them as absolutely vital.
    Defraggler
    Puran Defrag
    Malwarebytes
    Super AntiSpyware
    Avira Free Antivirus
    Spyware Blaster
    CCleaner
    Eraser
    Macrium Reflect Free
    Recuva
    BleachBit
    PrivaZer
    PrivaZer Shellbag Analyzer Cleaner

Just don't run so called optimization programs like Advanced Systemcare and Tuneup Utilities, which just usually delete important sections of the registry.
Well mate you know what they say about leading horses eh?? I don't know how many times it has to be said before it sinks in if it does at all in some.

I used to be fairly stupid years back when you used to get those CD's with PC mags and load stuff from them and little did I know what was going on until things started grinding to a halt.

I think some forums and magazines do give misleading information, which may be why they run those programs to begin with :)

Yes Harry reckon a lot is down to sponsorship too cos most of the mags now what there is left are adverts anyway. I also find some of the text a lot of hot twaddle too

Best software to use are Auslogics Boostspeed and Yamicsoft's Windows 7 Manager or Windows 8 Manager. By far the most intense tweaking software I've ever come across. You'll find all the available tweaks detailed to help achieve better performance in these 2 programs. Plus Windows Manager has a Registry Search program. Thus allowing you to search your entire registry for old programs and remove them. Boostspeed has changed their interface but you want to go to the Computer Speed/Performance tab and go to Tweak Manager. I hate how they changed it, but Tweak Manager is exactly what ever power user needs in their tools. Boostspeed also has stuff like File Recovery options which comes in handy. I've found it's better than any free recovery software.

This is a pretty long list. You have them all on your computer?

Agree. All I want is to make things easier, instead of mess it up. Learn to deal with it would be better. And there are some good programs if being properly used. This requires some knowledge of course.

As far as system maintenance is concerned I would suggest learning to do the tasks manually. Every bit of knowledge gained will increase your confidence in you and your machine when it comes to doing something more complicated later on.

Having said that I note that you want a "quick and easy" solution. Most of the "brand names" will do what they advertise with varying degrees of competence and aggression. AFTER you learn how to do the maintenance yourself find one that suits you. For me that's Ccleaner. Its safe, fast and not overly aggressive to your machine.

Well again CCleaner is the only tidy up one I use the drives more or less take care of themselves especially the SSD's and I suppose it is personal choice .

The only other thing I use is this Optimize Windows 7

But again User Attendite and if you don't well we'll see you back here to tidy things up for those who choose to use programs that promise all sorts of things yet in general never deliver - well apart for wrecking OS's and stuff.
