Black, Blinking & Beeping
Hello Everyone,
I will try to keep it brief (fat chance), hence the list. BTW, what is the prize for the longest post in the history of the forum? I prefer cash.
1.Thanks for making this fantastic forum available and for all of the help you provide.
2.I noticed several Vets, and maybe there are actives among you? I spotted one person that is a gold star parent. Thank you all for your service and the sacrifices you and your loved ones made to keep us, and most of the world, free.
3.I try to avoid posting for help. I try to be self-sufficient by reading a lot of the earlier posts and trying the suggested fixes.
None worked for me so here I am. Yet another among the needy.
Here is a list of before the problem, the problem, and what I did to attempt a fix.
1.Battery near collapse. Said fully charged but only lasted a very short time before low batt alert.
2.Updated Java JRE 32 & 64 and plugins for FireFox and IE. It was a struggle. Finally went to ninite.com for a utility that succeeded.
3.Lappy starts with the Gateway splash and then goes to black screen, blinking cursor and beeping. Perfectly matches the beat of "Stayin' Alive" (BeeGees disco hit).
4.F2 to access BIOS, and F8 to access Win7 options both work.
5.I press any key during the beeping and Win7 login proceeds as usual.
6.Win7 performs "same as it ever was" (Talking Heads) after the login.
7.I have done many things, but NOT used my day 1 recovery discs or the top secret, hidden partition. I have the important stuff at an online back up but I'm trying to take the ez way out. If you call many hours and extreme frustration "ez".
8.Tested memory = OK
9.Test HDD = OK
10.Created ntbtlog.txt (attached)
11.Image Burned of x17-58997.iso
Did Repair Puter/Sys Recov/Cmd Prompt/
Ran Bootrec.exe/FixMbr & FixBoot & Rebuild Bcd
Reboot result: "0 versions of Windows" &
".NET Framework 4.5 needs repair".
12.Did the F8 Advanced Repair options. Start Repair done 3 or more times. System said done OK.
Did System Restore to a day several days before the problem. System said done OK.
Did Chkdsk. Rebooted and system said, "1.Chkdsk scheduled 2.Chkdsk cancelled".
12.After reboot also noticed JRE 32 & 64, and browser plugins, all gone! They are not in Programs & Features and plugins are not in browsers!
13.Used x17-xxxx to do a "Repair Install".
Needed & did 140 Win7 updates.
Win7 faster and smoother than ever except for the start up problem.
14.Repair Install created 2 new folders: C:\$Inplace.~TR and $Windows.~Q.
15.Ran Safe Mode/MalwareBytes = OK
16.Ran Sfc/Scannow = OK
17.Did VGA driver update. Screen sharper than ever.
18.Checked BIOS. HDD is there.
19.Successfully updated BIOS.
20.Ran Windows Defender Full Scan = OK
21.Drank,smoked,kicked the dog (about the dog...not really).
22.Attached are all of the various log files for most of the things I did to attempt to fix.
23.If a clean install via my recovery discs is the best fix without wasting your time, so be it.
Thanks again!
PS. I'm an organ donor if that helps.
