    Java in/un install issues

I had Java7 V? installed. I Wanted to install the newest version. So, I uninstalled the one I had. At the very end of the uninstall process we had a power blink and the computer lost power. I looked all over the 6 drives for any sign of Java. Didn’t find any so started installing the new one. Immediately process stopped with a message saying can not install because Java is already installed. Do you want to overwrite it? Clicked “yes” a message popped up saying something like you can’t overwrite this because it’s not installed. And a forever loop born. Do any of you guru types have any idea what I should try now? I’ve already run several reg cleaners. There are a few entries in the HKEY_USERS hive. Any comments, ideas or rants would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the effort, I really appreciate it I really thought I had it this time. That fixit is great, just didn't do what I needed. I'm just going to jump in feet 1st and back up the registry and remove references to java. If I screw it up I can put it back. Thanks for trying,
    Tnx,

Your answer is in this probably in this thread:
Uninstall Old Java Version - Cannot Find

I'll see if I can find the post that I had in mind...

Around the 2 minute mark in the video in this post...
Uninstall Old Java Version - Cannot Find
...the area of the registry that you should remove is shown.

I know that the video and the thread is explaining why the Java removal tool fails at times - but I think that the normal Java installer looks for the same keys.

Thank You so much. That SunRa did the trick. Found 19 leftovers. Just ran the install, worked like a champ. Thanks everyone that responded. I'm back up and smiling.

    Standard lecture:
If you need Java, install it and keep it up to date.

If you do not need Java, uninstall it - because you are taking a risk for no benefit.

If you install both the 32bit and the 64bit version of Java, then you should know that the Java Control Panel applet will be the 64bit version. That version is lacking the tab to change the settings for when Java checks for updates. You can find the 32bit Java Control Panel applet in the \Program Files (x86)\Java\Jre7\Bin folder. It needs to be run as admin or the update settings will not stick. (Stupid Sun/Oracle!)
