Anyone having problems with Java applications?

Hello all. I have the latest version of java on a brand new fresh install of Windows Seven with all the available windows updates installed. I use several java based programs for work (From Nortel & Cisco) but they do not work properly. When I click to open any of these applications, they hang for a minute or two and eventually open, and then when they do open, they are completley sluggish and don't respond well. On my XP machine, these apps run instantly.

Is there anything else I can try??

make sure the JRE is the same level that your work requirements are - sometimes having the latest jre and sdk completely hozes up a system if you need to connect to corporate apps with several releases earlier.

Another get around is to run a small XP as a Virtual machine or try "XP Mode".

Until some of the corporate apps are on W7 older java apps could present a problem.

I connect to SAP via a "SAPGUI" which still needs an almost pre-historic level of the JRE 1.4.2 !!. Any later version and the whole app just randomly crashes.

Hi Jimbo,on further inspection, it doesn't do it on just these apps, it really does it anything that needs Java. When I tried the apps I previously mentioned, a process starts called javaw.exe and takes up 50% of the CPU until the program eventually loads and javaw.exe usage goes back to zero. With other java apps (I tried the Facbook Photo Uploader), a second instance of java.exe starts and again takes up 50% of CPU, and grind the computer to a halt until it eventually loads and then everything runs normally again.

I'm Not a JAVA expert but you could try unintalling the whole JAVA environment, then install again and try a small "Hello World" app witj the java interpreter run from the command line --(normally someting like javac.exe then your source file.

If that works then try for the Visual J 2010 from Ms - you can get the single user versions for free - with the Visual composer.

See what happens there.

I think also if you have a 64 bit OS installed you need both the 32 and 64 bit java libraries etc.

Hi Jimbo, I have re-installed and it continues to freeze on every java app, then after a few minutes will load correctly. This isn't a showstopper but is somewhat irritating.

I am having the exact same problem, it has nothing to do with java or the programs. I reverted to a save point before any of the windows updates were done and java works fine. But after any install of update java will stop working. I tried asking on the actual win7 forums, but like typical microsoft they shrug it off as being javas fault and not their own.

Hi Atlas, thanks for letting me know. I did install all the available Windows Updates after doing a fresh install of Ultimate, so I never had a working java. I really hope they find a fix.

Yeah, it should of made a save before the updates, atm that clean 7600 install is only time java works for me.

I just want to say that I have similar problems. However I am not completely convinced that it is a Java problem. I have Win7 Pro and the newest Java installed (1.6_16 I think). Java apps like Freemind or Jabref cannot be used - they are slow as hell. But I have a very specific similar problem in MS OfficeXP: when I type Ctrl+F to open the search dialog, the animated pop-up pops up very slowly. So I was wondering if maybe the problem is related to the graphics driver (ATI Mobility Radeon X1300). But there is no driver besides the one from Windows Update so I cannot check.

Since all Java apps have problems I think we need an update here. But from whom? MS or Java? And why do some people seem to have no problem with Java apps? What's the difference? I use a Thinkpad T60, no "special" software installed, just basic drivers and typical office software...

I've been having the same problem. I've found that the original release of JRE 1.6.0 works. It's still slow to start up, but applications still run. With any of the subsequent releases, I can't even access the control panel applet. This must be a rare problem, because I can't seem to find any solutions beyond uninstalling, using a cleanup program, then reinstalling, yet the problem persists. BTW, I'm running 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.
