Thanks for your post, that's interesting. So you say install JRE 1.6.0 (no updates) and all the applications run normally? Is it necessary to use a cleanup program like you said? Which one did you use?

Unfortunately installing JRE 1.6.0 is a very bad "solution" since JRE is a highly security critical software which demands for installing new updates. Running an old version is a security risk for your PC. On the other hand I am very interested in running those Java apps again... and unfortunately no one (from MS or Java) seems to be aware of the problem.

So far as I can tell, all of the java apps (really just JDownloader) I use run under 1.6.0, although there is a delay. It is also the only version for which I can get the control panel applet to appear. I don't really need to use any cleanup programs for this. I just need to uninstall all other versions of java. I know there are security issues, but it is the only way I can get java to work. I'm still trying to see if I can find a better solution, but so far I've come up empty. I'm surprised that this problem isn't more common.

Very strange - I still have the current Java 1.6.17 installed and the Control Panel applet shows no problems, I can start it as expected. But all Java-apps run extremly slowly. You're completely right - I cannot understand why this issue isn't more common.

    I found the SOLUTION:
if you have more than 1000 fonts installed in your computer JRE crash irremediably, because it scan all fonts installed when javaw.exe process run, for solved that, you must be unnistall all no system fonts that you have (it is an unnecessary unistall the adobe fonts) after that you must unnistall all Java enviroments and delete all java and sun folders in your computer, install JRE 6 update 17 after do you do this ( remember restar you computer after install JRE6), and ta, da¡ all java APP works perfect y had 10347 fonts installed, and my system crahs in a mortal way, but with this, java works perfectly, currently i have 342 fonts intalled, y expect that this solutions works for all.

    sorry for my bad english

I just tried Freemind and it works fine.

Use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to delete all java installs.

Delete \Program Files (x86)\Java and delete any folders and files that start with java.

Open Internet Explorer and go to java.com and install java. Do the same with FireFox and check the java install.

Thank you so much for solving my problem. This was driving me mad since I upgraded to Windows 7. I don't know how you could have known that, but thanks. I had about 8,000 fonts installed. Now my computer is so much more responsive. Rep for you.

Uhm... I have 207 fonts installed. I cannot believe this is the problem...? What exactly am I supposed to do? Uninstall all these fonts? But I think I need most of them occasionally... So can I reinstall them after doing what you suggested? Or do I have to live with just basic system fonts?

And is it really necessary to install Java in Firefox AND Internet Explorer?

Spock, I had around 5000 fonts installed. I have followed the instructions above and it has absolutely fixed the problem. This is not a solution for me however, as I work in graphic design and need these fonts a daily basis.

Anyway, all my apps now work, with absolutely no delay.

Thank you to Erion for finding the solution but someone needs to bring this to the attention of Sun/Windows.

I don't understand that one - Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does NOT uninstall any program as far as I know. It simply cleans up residuals from uninstalled msi-Installer-based software.

One question here - I only have the Win7 standard fonts and the Office 2007 standard fonts installed, which are 207. When I uninstall them, how can I bring them back? Since erion did not have the problem with 342 fonts, I don't see why I shoud start uninstalling my fonts. But if I try - how can I bring the Win7 fonts back?

I think there must be another cause for the problem. Erion has no problem with 342 fonts, I do have the problem with 207...
