I can't associate portable program as default program

I am trying to associate kmplayer.exe for these 3 file types - avi,mp4,flv. But whatever i try Window 7 is just refusing to recognize the kmplayer.exe file.
My KMPlayer is in portable format.
What can i do to make KMPlayer as default player for these file types or is there any third party program that can help me create this association?

Is this how you are associating the files?

Open With - Change Default Program

If so, and that is what is unsuccessful, exactly what happens?

If necessary, you might have a look at this

    OpenWith Enhanced

I tried creating association with Open With but when i browse to the KMPlayer.exe file and selected it, it doesn't add it to the list of the programs that i can choose as default programs. I don't know why, may be because the program is in portable format.

Hi peter7277, I have never used KM Player, but I do use Media Player Classic Home Cinema portable. I opened it's Options and set it like this.

My understanding is you can't use a portable format as a default program because it's not installed on the system.
Don't hate me if I'm wrong. Just my understanding.

    Portable Program associate file extensions

    Hi,

I don't use KMPlayer but I do have S-Player portable media player.

Now I can't say if this solution will work for you but this is what I did.

I can't associate portable program as default program-s-player-options.jpg

I left the S-Player settings alone and changed nothing. Didn't attempt to associate any extensions.

Then I created an elevated shortcut to the program's executable file in:

    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

(Copy and paste into the address bar in an explorer window).

Elevated Program Shortcut without UAC Prompt - Create

(The shortcut should be created here

    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

and not on your Desktop as shown in the tutorial. Or you can just use:

http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.152 - be careful and choose the correct download link.

Then rebooted. S-Player runs on start-up and that's not really useful - in fact it's annoying.

However I just right clicked an .mp4 file then chose Open with - browsed to splayer.exe and chose to always open with.

I can't associate portable program as default program-open-2.jpg

Rebooted - then removed the elevated shortcut that I'd created earlier. S-Player no longer auto-starts on boot and the default program settings stuck.

A workaround that's inconvenient but works is to add a shortcut to KMPlayer in your right click send to menu.

    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

If you right click on a video you can choose to open it with KMPlayer by choosing send to.

    Hi peter7277,
I right clicked mpc-hcportable.exe selected properties and got the option as in my image. My player works without being run as Admnistrator. Try it on KM Player.

I finally was able to create the file association from the KMPlayer settings. But from windows explorer still doesn't work.

Anyway, KMPlayer now is set as default player for these file extensions.
