Error from Service Control Manager - system cannot find the file

    Hello!
Not sure this is the correct forum, new here.

I constantly (roughly every 10ms) receive an error in Event Viewer

    Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/rF8Voi1.png
"The WinPcap Packet Driver (NPF) service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."

There is no such service. How can I find out what process is trying to start the service?

    Thank you!

Welcome to Seven Forums Nahoj. This is part of the WinPCap program usually used by network filtering/sniffer type programs. There should be a npf.sys in C:\windows\System32\drivers Do you have any network monitoring software such as Wireshark? A Guy

Hi A Guy, thanks for your reply.

    There's no npf.sys in C:\Windows\System32\drivers however there's npfs.sys

Yes I have Wireshark installed but it is not running.

I believe Wireshark installs npf.sys (not the npfs.sys you found). Perhaps reinstall wireshark and see if it does install the correct driver. Your error says it is not found, and indeed it is not where it should be. Found this:

Uninstalled Wireshark, likely that gets rid of it.

Just perplexed at what was trying to start it, considering Wireshark was not running

    Thanks for your help

No worries, it's basically a driver, so perhaps was just set to start and then went missing...or it's not supposed to try and start :)
