I have a big problem with installing VS2008 on Windows 7 Beta. On around 15% of installation it freezes for around half an hour and then alert that "Visual Studio 2008 Cannot be installed, because there is no Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed".
I tried running with all compatibility modes available in properties and of course its running with administrative privilliges.
When you said "Beta", you meant the RC (Build 7100) or Build 7000?? If you use build 7000, you should upgrade right now to the RC because it will shut itself on the 7000. 7100 will be functionnal until March 2010.

problem of windows xp sp 2 error message (when windows 7 platform used)
===========
my problem when installing vs2008 or vs2010 from a iso file (visual studio 2008 or 2010 installation) always at the beginning of the setup, windows xp sp 2 update or a error message like go.microsoft.com/fwlink has appeared.
then i have update my windows 7 ultimate 32 bit x86 platform with all update packs from windows update interface, but then again and again i have encountered in the same error windows many times. then the solution below has been useful for me and without any error, the setup process has been completed succesfully.
