What bit-torrent client are you using?

Does it stop other apps from connecting or are you just using all your bandwidth with the torrent download and other apps are very slow?

You can throttle your download speed on most clients.

It stops other apps from connecting even when Bitorrent downloads with 1/4 of my internet speed. It stops
the other apps from connecting even when the Bitorrent window is open only without downloading because i stopped the torrent download tasks.

Have you tried another client like Tixati (Tixati.com - Home) or Deluge (Deluge BitTorrent Client)?

Have a try lowering the number of maximum concurent connections allowed in the client. A common problem with regular home routers and modems is that they can't handle well the high number of simultaneous connections that the BitTorrent protocol normally generates, and so slow down or crash frequently.
Rebooting both router and modem may help temporarily.
