As an additional advice you could check new downloads with multi-engine scanners before running and installing new software. See the 2nd Tutorial in my signature below.

Besides looking at detection rates for an AV I always also look at its HIPS - Host-based intrusion prevention system. It's basically an application monitor that checks all running programs. For me it's as important as good detections. A good HIPS will warn about unknown or untrusted programs even if it finds them clean. For me that's a good HIPS

I want to thank everybody here for helping this old geezer out. I shall be up late tonight doing all the homework you have assigned me.

I am 70 years old and one of those who sits and thinks and tries to understand things. Like viruses. If I had the brains to write code (which I don't) what possible pleasure could it give me to write a piece of code to harm the computers of complete strangers who, for all I know, would, like you, go out of their way to help me if I faced a problem? I don't understand; maybe I'm too old.

Once again, thanks to all.

Its all about $$$

Hacking is a highly lucrative practice. They do get some pretty harsh punishments though if they get caught.

Registry optimizer
When I used Windows XP I had a utility that would back up and optimize the registry. If my memory serves me correctly, it was called ERUNT. But it doesn't seem to work on Windows 7. Does anyone one know of such a utility that will work on Windows 7? Thanks.
