Freemake Video Converter

Is this product now useless, due to the download being so riddled with malware and PUP's? If so, any suggestions for an alternative please.

You may try "Video to Video Converter". Started to use it over a year after dumping Freemake.
Here is the link to their web page:

Thanks very much for your prompt reply and link. That looks like a very good alternative. Have you used the ripping function, and if so, do you think it's a good replacement for WinX DVD ripper as well?

I have not used this application for ripping. I rip DVDs with DVD FAB which unfortunately comes with a price tag.

I have only used it to convert from FLV & AVI & MKV video formats to MP4. Converted files are used on a Samsung Blue Ray home player, a Samsung tablet and/or an Apple iPod Touch. So far conversions have worked flawlessly. Have not used other format conversions.

Other option I use is in the audio section. I strip the music/audio track from YouTube videos and play the MP3 track on a portable Creative Muvo player or burn to a CD and play in the car.

So far those are the only functions I've needed and used.

Thought I'd give an update now I've had a chance to play with the program. The conversion from AVI to MP4 does , as you say, give good results. I also found the facility to strip the audio from a video clip, removing hiss and clicks with Audacity, and then re-combining them, a good feature. However, I found a conversion from MP4 to MP2, gave a poor result. (Unless my settings were out!)
