I wouldn't dare try the Nokia Software updater on my phone until they release a W7 compatible version and other people verify that it is working correctly. Lots of people have bricked their phones using that app.

I have been using Nokia phones as long as I can remember. I always update the phone firmware when a new version is published to guarantee my phones are working correctly and I have the latest add-ons. I have never had a single problem with firmware update.

The most common mistake when updating Nokia's firmware is to forget to use General profile. If your phone has any other profile active when updating, there's a slight chance update does not work.

Nokia is moving away from PC Suite and concentrating more on Nokia Ovi Suite. You should download and install it. It is fully Windows 7 compatible.

To update your phone's firmware, just click Tools menu and choose Software Updates. Remember first to make backup, updating firmware restores factory defaults and deletes every installed application, contacts, sms, calendar entries, themes etc...

To update firmware your phone must be connected to computer using USB cable, you can not make firmware update over bluetooth or infrared. When connecting phone to Nokia Ovi Suite choose PC Suite as connection mode from your phone.

P.S. For those interested: Ovi, the word used in Ovi Suite and in the name of Nokia's webstore is a Finnish word meaning a door. Nokia is a town in Finland where the company was founded 1865 as a pulp mill.

this is the resolve for using NSU on Win7 which I've read from a site:

I have been running Nokia PC Suite and NSU on my Windows 7 x64 PC with no problems for a while... but now Win7's been officially released, NSU tried to run an upgrade when I ran it, then told me that it doesn't support the operating system!

Looks like someone is covering their backside until they get a copy of Win7 to play with

Anyway, the good news is that it DOES work on Windows 7 32 and 64 bit.

    • Forget about the automatic updater...
    • Download the updater file direct from the nokia site
    • Right click the file you downloaded and select Properties
    • Select the compatibilty tab and choose Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)
    • Click OK
    • Right click on the NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_en.exe file again and select Run as Administrator
    • Install as usual and away you go!

I tried to install Nokia's Ovi Suite but it won't install on my W7 system, even with the various compatibility modes. As far as I can tell, W7 is not yet officially supported. Of course, it could just be some issues with my particular system.

In Vista I successfully used PC Suite and the NSU, however, if one takes a look at Nokia's own forums, every single day there are numerous reports of people bricking their phones. And Nokia's software (for the PC) has always seemed quite buggy to me. So I personally wouldn't attempt to update my phones software using a W7 system, even though some may have had success, at least until Nokia comes out with a version that explicitly supports W7. It's just not worth it to me to take the chance of something bad happening, especially since so many have had problems.

Hankmas, what has a video converter to do with OP's question? And why sould anybody buy a video converter application when Nokia's own software Ovi Suite can easily transfer and convert videos from Windows Seven to phone?

That's sounds good!! It's working now with that one also...
