Eudora--PDF & .WMV Attachments

I'm using Windows 7, 64-bit. I've deleted and reinstalled Eudora three or four times now. The program works fine. I am able to send and receive emails without a hitch. My Windows Media Player and Adobe Reader 9 both work quite well.

However...when I receive emails with pdf attachments, I click on the links but can't open them. The Adobe Reader comes up but says that it can't find the document.

Also, when an email contains a .wmv link, I click on it and that, too, doesn't work.

If I go into the file structure of the computer and locate my attachment folder and click directly on the files, the pdf and .wmv files will open just fine.

The data files, inbox, etc. are located in the default location (documents->users->etc).

Any suggestions or solutions to this aggravating problem?

I have the same problem with Eudora. Not only that, but I have found that after a while it begins to crash, ultimately refusing even to start. Also, I have found that, even though Eudora seems to retain all new messages, both received and sent, the data files (.mbx files) in the data directory do not seem to get updated - if you open them with Notepad (as you can, since they are only text files), you find they do not contain any of the messages since installation. Curious, what? I wonder are the data files actually being stored elsewhere than in the chosen data directory, or in some sort of cache?
Installing Eudora in XP mode in the Windows Virtual PC solves these problems, but is rather an awkward way to go about things. I will probably go for a different email client (having been faithful to Eudora almost since its inception around the mid 1990s), such as Thunderbird or the Windows Live Mail program, which seem to work better and more stably.
Anyone any further ifdeas about this?

Silly users! You just THINK you installed to a folder called Eudora in Program Files.
Actually Windows 7 has moved everything to its bowels and na ni na ni nu nu to you!

I found my Eudora Attachments directory at
"C:\Users\Charlie\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Eudora\attach

I made a desktop shortcut to be able to view and run attachments I'm sent.
If you go up a layer you'll find your MBX and TOC files too.

Why? I don't know and was hoping to find out here.
I tried editing the Eudora.ini file since Eudora THINKS its files are going where they're supposed to go... but no joy.

I just found this on another forum and it probably applies to Windows 7 as well.


Vista is supposed to prevent you from storing anything else
into the "C:\Program Files" folder tree -- you have now verified that this works :)

Same issue -- all file writing attempted into "Program Files"
is diverted by Vista to a "Virtual store" folder.

Best to accept the Eudora installer's default location for mail,
which is "user's App Data," rather than under "Program Files";
then you will have no problems.

Others turn off Vista's "User Account Control" (UAC),
which turns off the security protections for you.

Thanks, cbiern. That's solved the mystery! I might just go back to using my favourite email client, Eudora, now that I know where to find the files if I want to make a backup.

What you need to do is creat another "attachment" folder outside of the program files folder..ie c:\attach..Then go to eudora, open tools>options>attachments and change the attachment directory to c:\attach..
