optical drives see the discs, but windows does nothing?

    hi,

recently replaced an optical drive as i thought it was a shagged cdrom, but basically, ANY DISC i put into the computer, they have stopped running automatically so you go into my computer, and you see the icon has changed for the correct cd i just put in, SOMETIMES, the computer will not let me into that cd to view files, SOMETIMES it will get as far (with a game) as the 'install, play ... etc etc' screen that pops up relating to the disc - so you click something and the optical drive does absolutely nothing further, windows registers sod all and basically the pc acts like there is nothing there after.

when i bought the new cdrom drive, i managed to install battlefield ok, and then went to install red alert and all the other games, and the computer started exactly the same crap as before. you can hear the drive initially fire up the disc, the quiet stage, you see the icon in mypc change ok, and thats it i get absolutely nothing else. and that is from ALL discs now. - so i established that the optical drives are perfectly fine and are not the prob here, its something else somewhere?

    anyone know whats going on?

    cheers,
    max

i do have to mention, every time windows updates major things about windows, it stuffs something up badly and im having to put up with something not working lke it should till windows gets another update fixing it. BEFORE i replaced my motherboard, and everything except the hard drive basically, the computer now and then within a month started being a dick with my games, before it was just red alert and a few older games, but battlefield series was ok. but then eventually the pc stopped running any discs at all. but it was all GRADUAL. so im a bit stumped now lol
