Finding the icon index number in dll/exe file

Hi,

Does anyone know of a program that will list the icon index for dll and exe files? Most icon program will display all the icons but I cannot find one that displays the actually index. This is helpful when trying to set drive images and using the icon files inside shell32.dll or imageres.dll.

Thanks...

Hello JrSweets, and welcome to Seven Forums.

IconViewer is a great free program for this. After you download and install the correct 32-bit or 64-bit (yours) version for your computer, it adds a Icons tab to the Properties page of the file to see the icons.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I had already tried that program but the it does not display the actually index that windows using when setting the drive icons in the registry.

For example:
c:\windows\systems32\shell32.dll,189

This is the attached icon, however IconViewer shows it as #303.

Thanks,
Jeff

When I tried to download Icon Factory from the link you gave me my AV (Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.5) said it was infected with a keylogger and blocked it from running. It looks like a false positive. However I could not get it running on Windows 7 64bit.

I was able to use Icon Explorer from the same company and it worked perfect.

The reason your AV popped up is because the site has some Password Recovery Utilities . I can guarantee you all files from that site are virus free.
