go to the Apple forums. folks there discuss itunes/ipod issues such as yours. this isn't a win7-specific issue.

Welcome to The Windows 7 forums, your issue is a driver issue. Are you only hearing 1 distinct sound when you connnect your pod? If so its the generic driver.
The second driver is the apple mobile device and it will show up in device manager.
I'm attaching a screen shot for you to see.

If you establish that you only have the 1 generic driver you will need to remove/uninstall all Apple Software including quicktime, bonjour etc. and re-install the Itunes 9.02 version for Windows 7

maybe i found an answer.... i noticed that the driver (6.0.9999.45) is 32 bit, according to a google search. can anyone confirm this and could this be the problem, as im running win7 and itunes in 64 bit? thanks guys.

is the Ipod service started? see attachment below

I had it disabled and my ipod would show up under "my computer" but would not show up in iTunes. I had to start the Ipod service from services.msc
