Hello Geek, welcome to SevenForums !

Download and install this update (x86)
Download details: Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office System (version 3.0 Runtime) Service Pack 1 (x86)

then try to install Visual Studio 2008 again

Are you logged in as an administrator? Are you running with the "Run as Administrator" option(right-click "Run as administrator)?

You may need to run through the system registry and remove any entries like Visual Studio. I installed VS 2008 under Windows 7 Ultimate X64. You'll need the upgrades, as you will get a message about incompatibilities with VS and Windows 7.

You can also try coping the install cd to your hard drive, then run the setup. I've done that a time or 2.

I had trouble installing the VS 2008 express editions on Vista64. Someplace I found an iso image with SP1 integrated. That went right on. I would think there would be one for the higher editions.
