Partition Wizard Crash - Recovering Files

I was using partition wizard to expand the system drive on my laptop that was filling up. To do this, I had 4 tasks lined up in the program. After the computer restarted and was copying files in the boot program, the laptop went to sleep. Because it had been copying files on my secondary drive, the system still boots to windows. I noticed that windows would not open my media files that I had stored on the other partition, so I tried repairing it with the file system scan. chkdsk now shows no file system errors on either partition, but my pictures still won't open and my itunes plays the wrong mp3s.

Is there anything I can do to fix this, besides go back in time and back everything up? Also, how do I prevent my computer from going to sleep while it is in boot mode with partition wizard? I can't do a system restore because I didn't have it setup on drive D. What recovery software could I try out?

Also, when I try to open a video file, I recognize it as one of my mp3s. In itunes, I can click on a beatles song and it plays a completely different artist. It seems as if when I fixed the file system problem, the files themselves were put in a completely different order.

Did you try scanning the borked drive with the PW partition recovery module?

Click the Disk in the top of PW main window - then partition recovery in the left pane.

Do a Quick scan.

It might give you two options - the current one and the previous one. Try recovering the previous one.

I don't know if it will help - it's worth a try.

You need to check in Control Panel>Power Options>Change Plan Settings>Change advanced power settings that your HD etc is not set to power off after a short while.

When I open PW and click on the messed up drive, the recovery panel remains grayed out. I have the option of running a full disk scan from Wizard>partion recovery wizard.

Would I want to run a full scan on the entire disk, or just the drive d partition that is messed up? When I originally did the resized operation, I modified both partitions on the disk.

Try the messed up one..

You can always run the recovery wiz again - and select something different to recover.

Remember to select ALL the partitions you want - including the one you are booted into now , and the system partition ( if you have a separate system partition )

I ran the recovery wizard and it didn't find any lost partitions. This makes sense because I can still access the partition that was messed up, including all my files. The problem is that the files either won't open (image and video files) or with my music files, they open as a completely different file ( ie: a beatles song playing metallica). Partition wizard failed as it was moving files on the D partition so that I could expand C. When I ran chkdsk, there were 4000+ orphaned files that repair assigned new file system entries. I'm guessing it assigned them different locations, so I can see the original file in windows, but it is linked to a completely different location on the disk.

Is there and recovery software available that possibly correct this file system mix up? Or should I start rebuilding my library from scratch? Also, was it a mistake to have PW repair my file system?

I am afraid PW is not perfect - there is always a very slight danger with any disk management operation.

It is always a good idea to make a backup image beforehand. Paragon includes an imaging app. just for that reason.

Easeus is doing this software free atm . it is very good - but I fear it will only recover it as you see it now- may be worth getting for the future as it is only free for a limited time.

I think you may need to start rebuilding your library.

With Easeus, would you run the partition recovery or the disk recovery first?

I only used it once - it did recover quite a bit - but that was from a formatted partition.

Well, the good news is I recovered most of my picture and video files using easeus. Unfortunately, 90% of my 70gb itunes library is garbage . Looks like I learned my lesson - always backup before modifying partitions.

Hi, I was about to decide to partition my os drive to separate it from my data using partition wizard which was introduced to me in this forum. I have never really done it before. The reason for doing this is because I just want to adhere to microsoft best practices.

However, after reading this thread, it seems that it is quite risky to do so. Any recommendations on how to do a backup image? What kind of applications is it best to use? Personally, I have only used norton ghost before. Any comments?
