This feature release does not contain any new fixes for security vulnerabilities to its previous release, Java SE 6 Update 17. Users who have Java SE 6 Update 17 have the latest security fixes and do not need to upgrade to this release to be current on security fixes.

That's good to know, I was wondering why it said I was up to date in the Java Control Panel. Thanks for the info Airbot.

Not sure what it's telling you you're up to date on what specifically. This update 18 is the latest update, it does contain fixes, just no new security fixes is what I was pointing out. If your Java is still update 17, it's still recommended to update to this one.

Ahh O.K. I misunderstood what you were saying, I'll update to the new one.
Thanks for clarifying that.

How many versions JRE have been released that set an update check to run at bootup and run in memory even when unchecking that option?

A quick look at Autoruns shows that Sun may have finally fixed this very annoying, and frankly what should have been embarrassing, item.

It's had the sunjavaupdate scheduler for quite a few version that I remember. All you need to do is uncheck them with autoruns, or a similar app that handles autostartup items. Shouldn't see it running anymore after that. Or course when you install a new java version, you have to do it again.

That was my point. It just makes no sense to have an option available, but not working. Many computer owners like to control what runs. Autoruns is just fantastic!

I also spoke too soon. The 32-bit version still sets an autorun update check.

Not as bad as getting splinters in your foot from hitting driftwood just below the surface while going 48 miles an hour.
