why do developers always assume we all want 7698745529 toolbars on our screen?
Well, I've worked in the Web Ad industry for approx. 2 years as a Web developer, and Ask was one of our partners for a while. Developers don't add toolbars because they think you'll use it, they add toolbars because Ask pays BIG money. That's all.

On their side, Ask makes money with all the sponsored links on their "search engine" when you use their toolbar to perform a Web search.

It's nothing more than money... once again.

yes, i know its all about the money. nevertheless: constantly frustrating your customers is not a good policy in the money making industry. sooner or later you will loose more than you gain.

Someone needs to tell that to Microsoft, AT&T, Dell, The IRS and few others

    Hahaha! Yep.

One thing though: because of Google's MUCH cleaner way of doing advertising, many of these companies are now closed of have sold their ad business (like my previous employer did). Most players in this "game" were total [insert curse word(s)] not caring at all about customers they didn't know anyways because this business has (or had) to many tiers. But's a long story... Thanks mostly to Google, clean webmasters only include clean advertising on their websites now.
