    Windows Explorer replacements

I came across this and think it's a cool Windows Explorer replacement. --> Xyplorer

    XYplorer - Product

    It is NOT Free.

But I like the feature of tabbed browsing in the explorer environment. I can see how this can be very handy.

You can download a 30 trial version. Otherwise it's $20.00

If anyone knows of any free explorer replacements with tabs please let me know.. I will try them out.

    Edit:

Hey I did find one that's pretty nice but please if you know of more let me know. I have been looking and looking around the net and trying lots of them. Many simply did not work correctly or had bugs right from the start.

The trick was finding a good free one that looks nice and works well - and has features the regular Explorer does not. I think I have found one.

    It's called Explorer + + .

Explorer++ - A small and fast file manager for Windows

I like it because it has tabbed browsing. Tabs in explorer helps make navigating through lots of windows much easier and smoother.

    Info:

" Explorer++ is a free multi-tab file manager for Windows. Available on Windows XP and above, it features the same familiar interface as Windows Explorer, while introducing several enhancements and improvements for a much richer file browsing experience.

    Features:

    • With the option to save to the registry or a configuration file, Explorer++ is completely portable.
    • Tabbed browsing for easy management of multiple folders.
    • Display window shows previews of files as they are selected.
    • Easy-to-remember keyboard shortcuts for quick navigation.
    • Customizable user interface.
    • Full drag-and-drop support with other applications, including Windows Explorer.
    • Advanced file operations such as merging and splitting supported. "

It comes in a 32 bit and 64 bit version.

This program is now Open Source so you can expect it to be around a while with good community support.

This program is a standalone application - no install needed.

This app does not replace your existing Explorer or make changes to windows. There may be a way to integrate this into Windows so you can use it as your default Explorer. I am looking into it.

Prior to 7, I liked Free Commander, but I seem to have some issues with it under 7. It doesn't seem to move the focus when clicking on the folder tree, and I have to use the arrow keys.

I'll try Explorer++ tonight when I get home. I've been using Explorer side by side by opening two instances of it (Windows-E, Windows-E, and then Windows-Right Arrow to make one instance take up the right half of the screen and Windows-Left Arrow to make the other instance take up the left half).

I am a bit surprised the Microsoft didn't upgrade the functionality of Explorer with Win 7. Using two instances of it side by side is pretty handy, but I like a tabbed interface or dual pane interface better.

Very nice ... I like Explorer++ a lot. I installed AutoHotKeys so I can launch it with the Windows-E macro, and it works really well under Win 7.

Its linked in this thread, and the site is at AutoHotkey - Free Mouse and Keyboard Macro Program with Hotkeys and AutoText
Basically, you write a script that has the key macro commands in it. Then you put the program in your start up group so it runs on boot. The line that launches Explorer++ in the script looks like this:

    #e::Run c:\Program Files\Explorer++\explorer++.exe

The "#" symbol means "Windows Key" for the script, so when I press Windows+E it launches the program. Its pretty slick, and works fine with Windows 7. The program I was using, Qliner, doesn't seem to work well.

I use both under Xp and 7ven what I found to be my best explorer replacement : Xplorer2 from http://www.zabkat.com.

It is light, tabbed, 3 panes available, lots of features (even if I don't use them all), stable and not expansive with real support from it's author.

    Another one

You should also try Q-Dir on
Q-Dir ist ein Datei-Explorer für alle für Windows Betriebsysteme
It's free, very configurable and the developer is a nice guy who adds features if you ask nicely. The software is also updated very quickly if a bug occurs.

Not free, but I have been using Directory Opus for years. It works great with Windows 7, and there is a 64-bit version. It is very configurable, has plugins, FTP, built-in viewers/players for many file types, advanced search, and other features. It also has a great user community and forum.
