current version is 14. you should always keep your software up to date. you do not loose anything going form the 5.x to the 14.x.
You got the idea totally wrong. In case you didn't know, Windows Messenger 5.x came with windows xp and was the alternate version of MSN Messenger. 5.x was also the very last version of it, there are no other newer versions.
Windows Live Messenger 14.x or whatsoever is actually the latest MSN Messenger but renamed to have the "windows live" word in its name.

Windows Messenger 5.x (note the lack of the word "live") and Windows Live Messenger 14.x are two different programs. As such, I was able to run BOTH as separate programs and log into TWO different msn accounts (one on each) at the SAME time, when I was still using Windows XP.

However, when I started using Windows 7 Pro and installed Windows Messenger 5.x, it doesn't appear at all, not even in the "Remove Programs" in the Control Panel.
as for logging-in in more than one location you can now do that with messenger without multiple copies of messenger running. you will just get asked if you want to stay logged-in at the other location. now i'm no microsour fan, however on this one for the added security alone i completely agree with their approach.

    edit:

even the link messenger pointed you to says windows live messenger, which is msn live messenger.
I am referring to logging in with multiple accounts from one location, without having to key in your username and password every single time you start your computer or the program. That is the reason why I want to be able to use Windows (NOT Live) Messenger 5.x.

If that is all you need to do, just grab digsby or trillian, or any other messenger app that can handle multiple accounts at the same time. You can sort them into different groups (so you know whom is in your buddy list for each account)

Digsby = IM + Email + Social Networks
Is Digsby or Trillian the better choice? I've been reading reviews and have found that Trillian is favoured...

IMHO Trillian is the better of the two...

I'll have to take the other side, i prefer the setup digsby has. Digsby is completely free, give it a try, then give trillian a try (not sure if the features you need are in the free version, may have to purchase trillian pro.)
