Software won't install and "access denied" issues

After I happily switched back to XP for a while, I was forced to do something, because my XP system partition gave me a lot of grief with the infamous events 51 and 9 and the day before yesterday I virtually stumbled from one BSOD to the next, while preparing a new 7 install on a different hd. I kind of resigned myself to the fact that this was a sign that it was time to move on. Alas, my new 7 Pro 64bit and me, we don't get along so well.

I was afraid, that really old programs (the ones you really need) would not work, but still, what do they have that compatibility mode for? And what was that about an integrated virtual XP? Something about an additional download from the microsoft site? I only found the usual updates.

But what really annoys me, are programs specificially for 7 that won't install with stupid errors like "The system cannot find the file specified." Please check your settings and try again. Yeah, sure, as if it was not the definition of insanity to repeat the same action and expect a different outcome. And by the way, which file? This really can drive you insane. I ran this in combatibility mode for XP SP2,3. I ran it as administrator (I am admin, duh!). I took ownership of the file. Nothing. And the funny thing about one specific install, it requires framework 2.0... which isn't at all compatible to 7, haha. Are they stupid or what?

Another funny install attempt, see attached error.
This, too, is for Win 7, according to the website. I browswed to the file I was asked to verify if I could access it and what do you know? I accessed it and the install proccess started all over again. So I had proven that I had access, but the same error came again. What do they want from me?

And a real turn off are the constant "access denied" messages when I try to access files I need to access. What, are we in a bad old movie and I have to guess someone's wife's birthday and use it as a password somewhere? (where?)
How can this thing shut me out of my own files? I can't use an OS that wants to tell me I can't do this or that. I usually know what I'm doing, if I'm not sure, I look it up before I do something potentially "dangerous". But I never intended to do anything, just look into a folder. Well, for starters, anyway. And it's MY folder *stomps foot*.

I downloaded that "take ownership key" I found here and man, I tried to own my whole computer! But still, some folders remain locked. For example the "found folder" on my troublesome XP partition, which I scanned from this one, because all attempts at repairing it before startup ended in a loop.

Okay, I think it's enough for now, though not at all the last of the annoyances I came upon since yesterday. Can anyone tell me if there is even a way to install software on this OS or can I forget it and use XP again. Again. Sigh.

Thanks for the link, but I didn't get very far.
After installing the first file, it doesn't show up where it's supposed to for the next step, but the stupid activation app wants to validate me every five minutes now to tell me that from now on I can enjoy all the shiny features without being harrassed every five minutes... *mad*

Do you have a legitimate version? Make sure it is activated.

I did tell you about the activation validation thingie, right? In my last post?
If it tells me, I can enjoy the features, it implies that I'm good, I think. But yes, I activated it right after installation yesterday. Also, it did let me download the files, but the installation of the virtual XP didn't go as supposed. On the page it says that under "all programs", there is supposed to be a "Windows Virtual PC" > "Windows XP Mode", which I should click on to proceed, but it just isn't there, so I cannot proceed.

    *~*

    And about the other issues?
I cannot access "Documents and Settings".
Which is not an option. I need to open this folder once in a while. Is this happening only to me or is everyone else just indifferent to that?

Yay, I just spent half an hour waiting for Mass Effect to install and of course after extracting all the files it realizes, it wants to install Visual C++ 2005 and can't. See attachment. Same fun thing as the other one yesterday.

What do I do now? Be glad that my licence for 7 was super cheap?
I think now I'll go to my XP and play for a bit ('til the next BSOD), which I apparently aren't allowed to in 7.

Okay, maybe I asked wrong. New try. Short questions, because nobody reads the long ones (precise information seems to be overrated).

    1. Is it normal that I can't access folders like "Documents and Settings" in Win7, regardless what I try, ownership, admin etc.?

    2. Is it normal that I can't install any programs that aren't specifically designed for Win7 (and so far 100% of those that are)?

    3. Is there a secret switch I have to push?

Make sure you are running all these programs and installers from an administrator account.

Also, where did you get your copy of Windows 7?

    Hello !!

1, In Windows 7 instead of Document and Setting you have Users. Its dangreous to play with permissions on Document and Setting because Windows purposly restricted permissions to that folder.

2, Not all Programs would work with Windows 7. Some Programs we be install but under Compatibility Mode.

3, There is no such secret switch but there is a secret account called Build-in Administrator when will enable you all administrator rights. You can follow this Tutorial to enable it Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable you could try to install Program under that account if your facing permission issues.

    Hope this helps,
    Captain

Yes, I tried to install the programs with admin account (is there any other way?) and again, yes, it is a genuine copy, MS says so. I didn't want to repeat all this again because of the lenghty postings issue.

That is a good piece of information, thank you. Still, I don't like being shut out of anything on MY computer. Why I still prefer XP...

    Okay, need to repeat it:
    1. programs specifically for Win7 don't install and
    2. I tried all compatibility modes.
    Made no difference.

3, There is no such secret switch but there is a secret account called Build-in Administrator when will enable you all administrator rights. Aha! So you're saying, my administrator isn't really one, but just a regular user with slightly elevated rights? Haha. Why the deceit?

Anyway, good to know, but I didn't have any permission issues regarding installation of software. I described my problems and errors in the first posting.

I'm really pulling my hair here, I need to get this thing working, because my other hd is dying fast and as soon as I copied all the data to external drives, I'll have to clean it and send it to Samsung for replacement. Then there'll be no more relaxing little trips into XP...
