Windows 7 Ultimate x86 build 7600 (XP, 98SE, 95, 3.11, DOS 7.10 on VM) + Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx

If you want to install the 32 Bit OS then go with 'ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent'
If you want the 64 Bit version, then its 'ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent'

The '-alternate' torrents will be text based installers and are used mainly for upgrading an existing installation

For virtualbox, I would suggest installing the 32 Bit version

Is this how you installed Ubuntu on Virtualbox
Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using VirtualBox

Maybe the download was corrupt. Try downloading the image again.
