workgroup chat software?

Not sure where to post, but I would like some advice on where to look for a workgroup chat software kinda like winchat in xp that's free. Is there one out there?

I'll second the use of openfire. I use it at work and it's served us very well.

I tried openfire that's way too much work for what I want. Just a simple chat that's not online. I don't want to use Yahoo messenger. Or am I missing something about openfire?

You could try Ip Messenger. Its not a full fledged chat software but a LAN messenger based on TCP which doesn't require a server and its lightweight.
