Why do you want to use it?

No registry cleaning is required normally in Win7. So just steer clear of registry cleaners, they can do more damage than good.

Use a good uninstaller app like Revo. That'll take care of most uninstall left overs.

    I echo Bill's post.

Windows is a closed source system. Developers of registry cleaners do not have the core code of Win 7 and are not working on definitive information, but rather empirical knowledge. Automatic cleaners will usually have to do some guesswork. Modifying registry keys incorrectly can cause Windows instability, or make Windows unbootable. No registry cleaner is completely safe and the potential is ever present to cause more problems than they claim to fix.

My advice for the average computer user is DO NOT using a registry cleaner. If you do not have knowledge of the registry, then you are far better off leaving it alone, and definitely not placing blind trust in a program to do the job for you. Registry cleaners cannot distinguish between good and bad. If you run a registry cleaner, it will delete all those keys which are obsolete and sitting idle; but in reality, those keys may well be needed by some programs or windows at a later time.

Registry defragger programs are a myth, too. They might trim the registry size by 8-12MB; but will not improve operating system performance. In fact, your programs’ performance will decrease.

Win 7 does not need a registry cleaner. Forget all the "wisdom" you learned about XP. Win 7 is not XP and does not manage the registry the same as XP.

Win 7 is much more efficient at managing the registry than previous Windows versions. If you are very knowledgeable of the registry, you can use Ccleaner to delete keys left over when uninstalling programs. However, these few keys will not make 1 millisecond's difference in performance. If you run Ccleaner or any other registry cleaner and do not know precisely what you are doing, you will have problems down the road. There are no gains to be had from using a registry cleaner and the risk is great

    Hi murphy2010 & welcome,
Registry questions such as yours are frequently asked.
My advice remains the same each time - viz...

IMO - there is no reliable way for a third party program to know whether any particular key is invalid, redundant or neither. Some registry cleaners may not know for sure whether a key is still being used by Windows or what detrimental effects removing it may have. This has led to examples of registry cleaners causing loss of functionality and/or system instability.
If you regularly do your computer "housework" you should not need to use one of these programs.

Regardless, I don't believe Registry Mechanic will work at all on Windows 7. A Guy

    Registry Mechanic

Hi, I currently use PC Tools Registry Mechanic-v10.0.0.134 on an HP Pavillion-180t, Quad i7, 3.33 Ghz, 16GB Ram, with Windows 7 (SP1) Home Premium, IE9 (RC). My first use began with Windows 95 about 10+ years ago. During the interveining period I have never, to the best of my limited knowledge had a problem with it. I have never used it daily or Weekly but intermittently. Has it helped?, Sometimes my computers have felt as if performance improved. Only once did a minor problem dissapear after its use. I will say I do not believe all Cleaners are the same. Yes, I have read many of the opinions regarding cleaners, 99% negative and I do not discount them. Of cource when I started using Registry Mechanic I had not encountered those opinions.

    Just another opinion.

    Hi Murphy2010

I have used various registry cleaners, defraggers and compactors in the past, none of which have given any discernable increase in speed or performance IMO. However it is, as stated above quite easy to allow these programs to fix something that doe's not need fixing, resulting in mysterious happenings weeks later.
If you are tempted to try out one of these programs, and i'm not trying to teach my mother to suck eggs, always do a complete registry backup before you allow them to run.

    Have fun..........Abedrax

I know this is an old thread but instead of making a new one, I had this same question so figure I post here. Is the consensus still the same that cleaning/compacting the registry isn't worth doing?

Does the latest Registry Mechanic still not work well with Windows 7?

Still the same consensus regarding RM and Optimizer's.
Most of us use CCleaner(free) to remove cookies and leftovers.
We don't mess with the registry option that comes with CCleaner.

    Agree with every post here.

    In one word....NO.

In no way should the registry be messed with, ESPECIALLY by an outside program.

There has never been a good, trustworthy registry cleaner, mechanic, defragger, optimizer.
