Freeware Text Editors

What are the best free text editors that you know of? I'm looking for something besides wordpad right now, and it would be perfect if it was skinnable. =)

Thanks.

Have you tried the Wordpad in Win 7. Terrific improvement of xp or vista Wordpad.

flo's freeware - Notepad2

That one even has a tut on making it the default notepad which works very well. In other words, If you use Edit with or View with Notepad it will open it up in Notepad2. It uses the same approach that Process Explorer and others do for replacing Task Manager. The replacement allows for jumplist when pinned to the taskbar.

Depends what features you want. For plain text I use EditPad Lite. For html programming PsPad. For AutoHotkey and AutoIt3 programming, Scite specialized editors.

I hate ribbons so instead of Wordpad on Windows 7 I use Atlantis Nova.
If you want built in spell checking that can also narrow it down. PsPad has it.
Or you can use an external spell check that uses the clipboard like ASpell and derivatives.

Wordpad is great, and I would use it if I could just skin it...

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I don't see anything skinnable though. =/ It doesn't even have to be skinabble, just so I can change the color. I do a lot of text editing, so I'd like it to match my theme partially.

Google of "skinable text editor" got this hit. Don't know how good it is. Never heard of it before:
